Eli (00:02.284)
Hello and welcome to the establishing shot a podcast where we do deep dives into directors and their filmography's I am your host Eli Price and we are here on episode 102 of the podcast and Yeah, we are in the middle of our Spielberg series on that kind of last stretch of his career Last week we covered warhorse and so I was thinking about a movie draft that me and my guest
from last week. Chase could do together. And yeah, we're, I was thinking like maybe animals in movies, but that felt too broad. So what we narrowed it down to was written animals. animals where someone rides on an animal in a movie, that's what we're drafting. It's oddly specific and I think could make for a really fun draft.
So, you know, obviously we're kind of coming off that idea of warhorse. He's a horse. But we're not, we don't have to draft horses. No, we might draft horses. We might not. But yeah, just has to be a couple horses on my list. OK, yeah, I have a couple too that that I like that I just I have no idea where I'm what I'm going to do in this draft. I have like a few that I would like to have maybe, but.
I just don't even know what strategy to employ. Like how do you win this draft? I don't know. I don't know what people are going to vote for as far as what ridden animals they like. I guess we're about to find out. We are. I hope you have a better strategy than me. yeah. Why ridden animals? Just because it's coming off of Warhorse.
There's no deep reasoning to this. This is one of the more silly fun movie drafts. But yeah, I think we should just jump into it. If you've never been, listened to a movie draft before, we basically just choose a category, in this case, written animals and movies, and we go back and forth drafting those movies. Once they're taken, they can't be taken again.
Eli (02:29.358)
And then, yeah, we kind of each other's choices against each other as kind of like little teams of movies in that category and let you, the listener, and everyone else on the socials vote on who had the better draft. So that's kind of the idea, just kind of a fun way to get to talk about some weird category in this case in movies. But yeah.
I mean, Chase have done a couple of drafts together. He always let first time guests get the first pick and then next time I'll take the first pick. And so we're, this is our third draft together. So we're back to you getting the first pick. So go ahead and take your first pick unless it's something I want. So my, my strategy, the only strategy I had coming in was like,
I had two movies where I was like, okay, I'm going to take one of these as number one, kind of depending on, I couldn't remember whose turn it was to like take first in the draft. And I was like, okay, if I get first in the draft, this is what I'm going to take. But I thought it was one that might be obvious to you.
Okay, so I had like my backup of like an obvious one for you that I was gonna take in retaliation. Okay. So my first one, I'm gonna do Yakuul, the red elk from Princess Mononoke. Okay. Yeah. So not Moro? No. Okay. No, I'm not going with the wolf. I'm going with the elk that, oh, what's his name? The main character rides the whole time. Okay. Very cool. Okay. See, so...
That was gonna be my first, so we're making up rules as we go, but once a movie is taken, even if it's not the animal you would have chosen, let's take it off the board. Fair. But yeah, I was gonna go with Moro because Moro is freakin' awesome. Moro is freakin' awesome, but so is Yakul. Yeah, Yakul is just such a good boy. I couldn't have even told you the name of that elk, to be honest.
Eli (04:39.116)
Because it doesn't talk does it it doesn't yes and morrow is an actual like character that talks but also gets written by Very true by Maranoke so Or whatever her name is son son. Yeah, yeah But yeah, yeah great choice that was gonna be my my first choice was gonna be more so And I had a feeling that you were gonna go that direction
And so that's why I was like, man, I'm really sad that I'm not getting to take more. so sorry. But, yeah, that would have been my first choice. Sad day. Great. First choice. It was the right, it was the right decision. even if I would have picked a different animal. Sure. I can also, I can see why that would be a great choice too. Yeah. it was one I had thought about, but I was only going to pick one of them. okay. So.
You went that direction.
Eli (05:40.91)
I think I'm going to go ahead, I don't know, this is the thing, I have no idea from after that what you might have on your list. I have no idea. So I'm just going to take one, this is going to be, so this is kind of like a, this might be like a crowd favorite get votes choice, but also like one of the most awesome cinematic experiences of my life that
that happened last year in the movies. And I'm gonna take the Shyhalood that Paula Trades writes in Dune Part II. That scene That is a great scene. That didn't even cross my mind for but that is a great choice. Yeah, that scene. mean, for real, the movie is really good. I like those movies. They're not my favorite or anything.
I think they're, I think just due to like the source material they're trying to adapt, it's just hard to like tell that story. But Villeneuve does great doing it the best you possibly can. Sure. With what you're working with. yeah, that sequence where Paul is riding the worm, the sand worm, if you're not aware, the shy Hulu is what the...
what the Fremen people call the big, huge giant sand worms. Seats vibrating, I felt like I was in the middle of the sandstorm on the back of a giant sand worm. Incredible cinematic experience. I didn't know that's what I was gonna take number one, but
Yeah, I'm glad I did. Great choice, great sequence. Yeah. Okay, back to you.
Eli (07:54.766)
For my second choice I am going to take I'll go ahead and do the first real horse of the draft. Okay I'm gonna take the wild honeymoon stallion from the the secret ending of Napoleon Dynamite Okay, the secret ending of Napoleon Dynamite Kip and Lafondas wedding Okay
at the end of the wedding Kip singing his little song into the PA system and Napoleon comes riding up on a horse Yeah, he claims to have trained for Caught broken and trained for them that morning for their wedding It's been so long since I've seen Napoleon dynamite and I guess that's just not a part that ever like stuck in my brain lots of lots of parts have stuck in my brain sure we're watching it a million times, but I guess that didn't I
never crossed my mind. I was just thinking of horses and somehow that jumped in my brain and I love Napoleon. So what did you call the horse? I'm running it down. I actually went and looked up the scene and rewatched it. He calls it a wild honeymoon stallion. Wild honey. Wild honeymoon stallion for you guys. That's awesome. Yeah. Yeah. Great pull. It was not on my radar at all.
Man Napoleon Dynamite, what a what a movie yes it is Okay, I Man this is this is hard It's a couple of ways I could go here I'm gonna go ahead and go the animated route now and these were The the first couple of these movies are really really enjoyed
and I'm going to slowly reveal what it is. The third one was not as great. There's three of these movies. DreamWorks Movies. there's your Spielberg connection sort of, even though he's not involved with DreamWorks animation at this point. yeah, this year they're making a live quote unquote, well, yeah, live action version of this movie that I plan on.
Eli (10:20.81)
not going to theaters of sea in rebellion. And I'm gonna pick Toothless from How to Train Your man, what a cool little dragon. huh. This was the one that if you had gotten Mononoke before me, I was gonna take Toothless. Okay, so you knew it was on my radar. sure. I know how much you love those first two. Yeah. Yeah.
They are great. I love them too. I need to really show those to Ezekiel, my son, because he loves like dragons and stuff. He does. I think he would really get a kick out of it. Yeah. So we, we do homeschooling and he's going to, he's going into first grade and my wife's been getting together like, American history curriculum stuff for him. We're going to start that. And she's
planning on starting with Vikings and stuff. So I was thinking, maybe that'll be a fun time to like, it's kind of adjacent to that sort of culture. So it'd be fun to like, I don't know. Maybe piggyback off of that. Yeah, just piggyback off the Vikings and show him how to train your jacket. That might be a good time to do it. So yeah, that's my second pick. I'm pretty happy with, even though I didn't get more, I'm still a little bit sad about it.
I'm starting to get my spirits picked back up a little bit here, so. Alright, you've got your next pick. for my next pick... Ummm...
There's more actually good options than I originally thought when I originally chose to do this draft. I'm gonna go...
Eli (12:16.782)
There's an obvious Star Wars pic that we had joked about a few times when coming up to this draft. I'm gonna take my Star Wars pic, but it's not gonna be that one and I'll just leave it unsaid. But I'm gonna take Obi-Wan's lizard from episode three. That might be my favorite part of that movie, is just that silly lizard running around making that weird noise.
sound. The least secretive thing that he could have chosen to sneak around this military base on. Wow, Blizzard. Uh-huh. yeah. That's great. So yeah, as you were describing what your pick was going to be, I knew exactly what you didn't pick that we might do in honorable mentions. I don't think I'm going to pick it. But I knew what you were talking about. And then
As you kept talking, I was like wondering, is he going to do the lizard? Yeah, that would be one right. Uh, yeah, I'm glad you did. Uh, I don't know what that I'm just going to type big lizard. Sure. I'm sure. have no, there's a name of it. I'm going to have a name of that species. I'll make sure to get on wookie pedia, um, to, find the name of it before I post it in the poll. Um, so is that, is that in, um, attack of the clones?
I think it's Revenge of the Sith. Is it Reven- okay. Yeah. So, yep. Yeah, I think you're right, cause, Yeah, cause it's right before he fights, Grievous. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yep. alright. So, that was not on my list, so... Yeah, I guess I'll keep... So, okay. I guess at this point, I don't know if you're going- you were planning on going back to the Miyazaki Well.
Go ahead. But you had your Miyazaki movie. This would not have been my first choice for this category, but this is from my favorite Miyazaki movie. And I'm going to pick Cat Bus from my neighbor Totoro. That's a great choice. Because unless you're allergic to cats, which my wife is, what better ride could you take than hopping in the old Cat Bus and
Eli (14:39.212)
Roman around the Japanese countryside, you know. I showed this movie to Ezekiel probably like, it's been a while now. Maybe two years? Yeah, one or two years ago, maybe somewhere in between there. But he like, the couple of times that, well, every time Totoro pops up, which in the movie is like less than you might think for a movie named after him.
Every time Totoro popped up, he was like beaming and excited. like, CatBus especially. The couple of times CatBus shows up, he was like tuned in. He was like all about CatBus. He wanted a CatBus for his birthday. not, I tried to explain, okay, but it's gonna be like, you know, small stuffed CatBus if you get one. And he was like, no, I want a real CatBus.
which he was okay with the stuffed one that he did get. yeah, so in his honor and because it is my favorite, favorite Miyazaki movie, I'm gonna go Cat Puss. Great choice. Yeah.
Alright, back to you. This is your fourth pick. We've got two more each. Doing five picks each. Boy. Yeah, I know. There's more.
Huh?
Eli (16:06.542)
This is where it gets tough. This was, I think... So there are a bunch of good ridden options from the Disney Renaissance. Sure. But the last one that came into my head I think is the most fun choice. Okay. I'm gonna go with Pumba. Yeah. Because Timon is constantly riding Pumba. I did have that on my list. I don't think I would have gotten to picking it, but yeah, that was definitely on my list. I had thought about like, yeah, Timon rides Pumba.
Yeah, I guess Pumba would be the one that's written. Yeah, I mean, that's a good choice. I guess the standout one is like when they're fighting the hyenas. Sure. Yeah. And kind of charging. Literally, I think they yell, charge. Yeah. Yeah. Good choice. That'll definitely get you some votes. sure. Man, OK.
Eli (17:05.07)
Alright.
You did... this is tough.
Okay, this will be one that I really like and probably will be, maybe hopefully make up for some Lion King votes. It's tough though. There's a lot of directions I could go. Yeah, I'm gonna do this. I'm gonna leave some maybe like, I'll leave like a personal fun
choice that's not gonna give me any votes for the last one and just because some of the some of the some of the reason of doing a movie draft is just like to put movies out there that people haven't seen so I'll save that for my fifth one and this will be the populist pick I'm gonna choose Buckbeak from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Maskaban what a great little like he's a hippogriff I think yes the name of the creature it's like kind of like
horse meets eagle slash owl slash I don't know he's he's kind of like I don't know exactly I don't I'm not sure what kind of chimera that is exactly yeah yeah but but yeah Buckbeak is he's very majestic he is he's very he's a very like partly because of like
Eli (18:35.704)
Hagrid's relationship with bug me. He's like a very lovable character like creature like kind of like side creature character and is also like very like pivotal to like the story in prisoners of Azkaban like he kind of like pops up throughout the story like and you don't really know how like important he is until like he's very important and even at one point. I won't do spoilers
I won't do spoilers about all that and there's some like There's some kind of like reveals and stuff and prisoners of Azkaban as you go through if you remember I do with deal dealing around buck beak and You know things that did or did not happen You know, so if you know, you know what I'm talking about But it's also my favorite Harry Potter movie. I think
I think so too. That seems to kind of be the consensus and I think I agree with that consensus. Yeah, I think it's my favorite Harry Potter book and movie. yeah, so, populist pick, yeah, but also like, I really like it. It's a good pick. Yeah. Yeah, this is your last pick. boy, last pick. Decisions have to be made.
Ever since I've kind of stopped doing seven, eight, nine, ten per person, it really makes these drafts harder to just have to pick five each. Yeah. Because you got to leave a lot of good ones on the table. You do.
Eli (20:21.934)
Do I want to go? I could go a populist route. I could go Just like pure horse movie route. Yeah
Or you could just do a personal, like, you should see this movie. That's what I'm gonna- I think that's what I'll do. I don't think you have- yeah. I'm not worried about you picking the movie I'm gonna choose last, cause I know, like, I can almost 100 % say you're not going to. I'm going to go with Ambrosius the sheepdog in Labyrinth. That, Ser Dittimus the Fox Knight rides. Okay. I haven't seen that.
really? But I would like to. It feels like a fun... yeah, you'll... ...movie of its era, sort of. And you'll love it, like the puppetry and just the effects and everything. It's great. Okay, yeah. Are they redoing? Isn't someone supposed to be redoing Labyrinth? I don't know that they're redoing it. I think they're doing kind of a sequel type thing. Okay. it's Jim Henson Studios. Okay.
I had heard that, and now that you mention it, I haven't thought about that in a while. Yeah, feel like it's a pretty big... I think maybe, because Netflix did the prequel series to Dark Crystal a few years ago. Oh, Robert Eggers is going to be directing this. Well, I'm on board. Yeah, I mean, it's Robert Eggers.
Elaborate movie directed by Robert Ecker's. Yeah. Hey not a remake but a sequel like you said to the 86 film Yeah, well That'll give me a reason to watch the original when that one comes out. So definitely yeah, I'll probably catch up with it I don't see why not so Ambrosius and what is Ambrosius again? He's a sheepdog a sheepdog. Yeah That's great, yeah, that's a fun pick
Eli (22:26.412)
You might get some votes for that. It's kind of like one of those movies with a cult following. Partly played by a real dog, partly played by a puppet. Great. Yeah. Perfect. OK. My fun last pick is going to be the...
Cal named brown eyes from buster keaton's 1925 movie go west nice have you seen that i haven't no but i've seen clips of it and i know i know what you're talking about it's i love buster keaton so anytime opportunity opportunity to take a buster keaton movie i'm probably going to but i'm trying to pull up my ranking list i i like go west a good bit like i probably
It's it's not like in his like top tier of movies, but it's probably like right under that It's it's this It's like a how long ago West? 69 minute Move, you know, it's Buster Keaton. So it's black and white silent era, right 1925 So a hundred years old this year, so I guess I'll I guess I'll have to pull it up in honor of this draft maybe later this week and
watch it. Maybe I'll watch, this is a movie I could watch with the kids. And I think they would, and my daughter Elsie loves cows. And the great thing about Go West is Buster Keaton ends up having to work on this wrench. You know, it's kind of the typical like down on his luck has to, you know, go work, do this like to get by kind of thing.
ends up on this ranch. not belong. Buster Keaton, the kind of character he usually plays, this dude does not belong on a ranch. And so you can imagine the types of shenanigans he gets into. But he really befriends this one cow named Brown Eyes. It's female cow. And they become friends. He loves this cow. There's a point late in the movie.
Eli (24:47.938)
You know, there's not really spoilers with Buster Keaton. It's, you know, bare bones plotting. So you don't really spoil things. And even me describing what happens, you still just have to see it for yourself. But there's things, one thing leads to another, and there ends up being a stampede of cows and bulls through this, like this main street of this town. And of course,
because of Buster Keaton, whatever shenanigans Buster Keaton was accidentally doing. And he's looking for Brown Eyes, his favorite cow. And yeah, that's the point where he finally, the stampede is coming and he finally finds Brown Eyes and she takes off and he hops on Brown Eyes and gets to ride her. And then the best part is, and there's the farmer that he's working for and the farmer's daughter and he gets all the bulls back.
to the farm and the farmer's like, can have anything, I owe you everything, you can have whatever you want. And he says, I want her. It's not the farmer's daughter though. It's very nice. Because Buster Keaton in Go West falls in love with a cow and they ride away together into the sunset. and so I couldn't not pick.
Brown Eyes the cow that Buster Keaton falls in love with for my last pick. yeah, Brown Eyes it is. Left some good ones on the board that I probably should have picked, but I had to go with my heart just like Buster Keaton did when he chose Brown Eyes over the farm girl. Absolutely. Yeah. All right. Well, it's time for honorable mentions. There's a lot of good ones. I know I have
I have a much bigger list than I thought I was going to have when I first decided on this draft. What are some of yours?
Eli (26:56.396)
I mean there's all the Lord of the Rings potential answers. Shadow Facts? Shadow Facts, the Fel Beasts. Let's see. I feel like the Wolves are ridden at one point. yeah, you're right, by the Wargs. Yeah. Yeah. Or not, the Wargs I think are actually what they're called in Lord of the Rings language. But they're Wolves. They're Wolves. They're big Wolves. Yeah.
I don't guess the ints really count as animals. Yeah. My, if, if we had like more picks and you really wanted to do a joke pick, you could do Ratatouille and say that the human is the animal being written. just speaking of picks, I thought about bullseye, and also I couldn't think of the name of the dog, but Andy's dog that, what he tends to ride.
Yeah, I think Rex is written at one point. Maybe so in Toy Story Yeah animated stuff, I mean there's There if you want to do another Miyazaki, you could do Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind. Mm-hmm I don't remember what those things are called that she rides But there's these big weird Insect things. Yeah, they're pretty cool
That sounds right. Maybe. There was a 2020 movie by, what's that studio? Cartoon saloon, the Wolfwalkers. Did you see that? No, I didn't. yeah, it's great. But she rides wolves at some point in that movie. mean, in Spirited Away, she rides the dragon at the end. True. The dragon slash river spirit slash.
Yeah, kid, boy. There's, what's the turtle's name? And Finding Nemo. Oh, Crush. yeah. Crush. Rango, they ride those like, I think they're roadrunners. As horses. I don't remember that. Rango. Yeah. The Johnny Depp chameleon movie, Rango? Yep.
Eli (29:27.18)
Yeah, they ride, they like ride road runners, of like horses, and then the bad guys like fly in on bats at some point. Yeah, there's like a whole like ride of the Valkyries sequence with the bad guys like coming in on bats. That's like definitely like Apocalypse Now reference. I haven't seen that movie in forever. I know, I need to see it. There's a Vagera. Sure.
Jungle Book, My Father's Dragon, Rise of the Dragon. It's good kids book and pretty good little kids movie too. Cool. Yeah. And then I also had Raya and The Last Dragon. There's the, she rides the last dragon quote unquote, Aquafina at some point, but the actually like cool thing is those like giant armadillos that they like, that roll.
They have like some sort of saddle that like doesn't like roll with it, but like stays. Yeah, it's really cool. That is cool. I haven't seen it yet Yeah, that's a cool. That's like one. That's like just a cool Way to ride an animal. Yeah, that was like worth mentioning, but those are like the animated ones I had Yeah, did you have any other ones that stood out you can mention the
Empire Strikes Back and yes Empire Strikes Back the the Tantans the Tantans. Yeah, they make for great snow riding animals and also great you know blankets Yeah, mentioned the horse like if you wanted more horses you got we've mentioned shadow facts from Lord of the Rings there's also
The horses in Nope. yeah. Lucky, I think is the main character's horse's name. There's a few others like- That had crossed my mind for the draft. Yeah, those are great horses in a movie. Ben Hur, you have like lot of horse riding. True. The main sequence I was thinking of, because at first I had Ben Hur pretty high up, but I was thinking of the chariot race, and I was like, well, they're not really riding.
Eli (31:49.186)
the horses in the chariot race so I kind of took it off the list but I thought it was worth mentioning. It is. Yeah. There's really the only... Any given western really. and the Planet of the Apes series. yeah. Both the old ones and the new ones. riding, apes riding horses. Pretty cool. Very cool. That's all I had for horses though. There weren't really, I mean, I did have one more that I forgot to put on my list.
the horse in, I haven't seen the old Tru Grit, but the Coen's Tru Grit. I can't think of the horse's name. It has like a standout name, I just can't think of it. But yeah, especially like, it's pretty pivotal like, in that like last like, making it back home moment. yeah, so that's a good horse too. That is a good horse. What about, do you have any CGI animals?
I'm gonna throw out there. Better ridden. There's some good ones. There are some good ones. I have some on my list. I don't know. I stopped my list after a certain point because I was like, this is gonna be enough. But yeah. So many honorable mentions. So many.
Eli (33:11.052)
Yeah, I have a couple of... So before the CGI ones, another practical effects one, I'm pretty sure. It is the aunt named Auntie in Hunting, Shrunk the Kids. yeah. I had thought about putting that up at the top of my... know, towards the top at one point, but didn't end up going that direction. But yeah, think the rest are CGI'd. What else you got?
Well, OK, so there's one that I don't think the animal being ridden is CGI, but the. The rider probably is, and that's in Paddington 2 when he had you seen. haven't. You still haven't seen it. I still haven't seen it. There's that one. There's one point where he's like being chased and Paddington is riding on this dog and it's like a really fun sequence. Nice. Yeah. So those are probably the only.
ones I have left that aren't CGI'd. Yeah, did you pull it? Did you have any up that you pulled up? No, not really. I'm just kind of like looking through movies if anything obvious jumps out at me. Yeah, so if you have Aslan and the Chronicles of Narnia, Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe especially, probably. Also the unicorn that Peter rides. Yeah. So I put this shirt on because
It's the only shirt I have with anything being written. yeah, Max does, in Where the Wild Things Are, ride one of the wild things. I need to re-watch that. I really loved it. I saw it when I was a kid when it came out, and it probably just wasn't the right time for me to watch it. it's one of those kids movies that's probably more affecting when you're an adult. Yeah. And it has that very...
Childlike perspective that you but that adults probably like connect to a more emotionally maybe than even kids do I don't That's probably selling kids short, but whatever Two more and then we'll be done I have okja Hmm she does ride around on okja some yeah Yeah, and then there's like several like avatar James Cameron avatar
Eli (35:37.39)
Those are some cool animals. Yeah, pretty pretty cool. Like I don't know. Let me see. I think I have pulled up in Google what they're called. There's one that's called the Mountain Banshees and the Navi. They're called Ikran. And then there's the great Leonor, Leonet Trix, which the Navi called the Torek. And they're honestly like when you look at pictures of them, they're the the second one is just like a
seems like a fancier version of the first one. I remember thinking that during the movie. But yeah, I still don't know what to do with like the sex adjacent hair thing they do. Yeah. Everything. With each other and animals and plants. Plants and yeah, it's still weird. One of the weirdest things of them about those movies. that first.
Experiencing that first Avatar movie like in 3D in the theaters was like a really, really incredible, like memorable experience. Oh, yeah. And you know, those animals were really cool and part of it. So I figured I'd give it a shout out to you. sure. Yeah. But that's all I have. That's all the honorable mentions I have. Cool. Yeah, let me let me read out the our picks. OK, you're going to have to remind me, does the
Elk and Princess Mononoke have a name? Yeah, it's Yakul. Y-A-K-U-L? Yakul. And that's a red elk. Yes. Yakul.
Eli (37:20.46)
Alright, now I am completely prepared to out our lists.
Pumba in The Lion King and Ambrosius the sheepdog in Labyrinth. Yep. That's a fun list. It is a fun list. Yeah, I feel good about it. Yeah My list I ended up with the Shyhulud Sandworm from Dune part 2 Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, the Cat Bus in Minodebertodoro Buckbeak from Prisoner of Azkaban and Brown Eyes the Cow
Buster Keaton's go west so also a great list.
